Professional Teeth Cleaning — The First Step Toward Great Dental Health

A frightening statistic: just 64% of US individuals aged 18 to 64 had seen the dentist in the previous year. While brushing twice a day and flossing once a day helps to prevent plaque from accumulating on your teeth, they cannot prevent all of it from condensing and hardening into a thick plaque known as tartar.

Plaque and tartar are both harmful to your teeth. Plaque is a thick film that builds on your teeth as a result of residual sugars and carbohydrates from the meals you've consumed. Plaque is made up of bacteria that produce acids onto your teeth, causing tooth damage and gingivitis (gum disease).

If plaque is left on your teeth for too long, it hardens into tartar, posing an even greater threat to your oral health. Tartar forms immediately above and below your gum line. It has a rough and porous texture that can lead to receding gums and gum disease.

Because most of us have plaque and tartar accumulation on our teeth, it is important to have dental appointments every six months. Tartar is so tough that it can be removed by a trained dentist.

Royal Oak Family Dental, in Oklahoma City, OK is available to meet all of your dental requirements, from general and preventative to aesthetic and reconstructive. As a result, we've put up this handy guide explaining why dental cleanings are the first step in maintaining a healthy smile.

What to expect from your professional cleaning

A professional dental cleaning consists of two steps. First, we do a dental checkup or examination. To screen for cavities, we use X-rays to see if there are any differences in the structure of your teeth.

We next proceed with the exam by inspecting your teeth for plaque or tartar accumulation. We also examine your gums for gingivitis using an instrument that measures the depth of the crevices between your teeth and your gums. When your gums are healthy, these areas are rather shallow, but when you have gingivitis, these pockets are frequently significantly deeper.

The second half of your professional cleaning consists of a cleansing, also known as oral prophylaxis. We'll begin the cleaning with a scaling, which involves using specialized instruments to remove hardened tartar from your teeth.

We then polish your teeth with a rotating brush and a gritty paste. Following the polishing, we floss your teeth to ensure that the regions between your teeth are clear of plaque and food.
